Main research achievements of the Laboratory

Protein polymorphism in nature populations of whitefishes of the North-East of Asia has been studied. Conception of ancestral and derived form of protein has been formulated, that allows using of genetic data for reconstruction of evolution of the species belonging to Coregonus genus.

On the basis of karyological studies a hypothesis of colonization and habitat formation of the modern species whitefishes and graylings has been developed; a scheme of relationships of the main evolutionary stems of the Salmon fishes has been specified.

Genetic structure of the Pacific salmon: Chum Salmon, Kokanee, Humpback Salmon, has been studied on the considerable part of their habitat. Intraspecies differentiation mostly of regional character was revealed for all three species by methods of biochemical genetics and phenetics. Interpopulation differences at Pacific salmon within each region is characterized by peculiarities, which, apparently, are connected with the history of their origin and distribution.

According to study results of mitochondrial DNA polymorphism, an estimation of genetic diversity of populations of some species of Pacific salmon of the North-East of Russia was given. On the basis of data on variability of mtDNA suppositions was made about their relationships and demographic events in the studied populations.

Monitoring of genetic and phenetic diversity of the Pacific salmon populations showed natural dynamics and abnormal deviation of this parameter from optimal values. Ppulations of the studied species were shown to be characterized by high stability level of genetic and phenetic diversity.

Analysis of nucleotide sequences of control region fragment and cytochrome b of mtDNA of the North Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) from 20 localities of the Northern Pacifica along the coast of Asia and Northern America was conducted jointly with Canadian and American researchers. Distinct genealogical differentiation of herring from Northern Pacifica between eastern and western populations was revealed. Asian herring is characterized by one mitochondrial line, whereas Northern American herring, by two lines.

An allozyme variability in different taxa of mammals (seals and eared seals, Pacific porpoise, carnivore, rodents), birds (grouse, albatrosses and alcidine) of the North-East of Russia has been studied. Morphological, karyological and biochemical evolution of the seals was shown to represent three parallel almost independent from each other processes of different rate.

For the first time peculiarities of special and temporal genetic heterogeneity in populations of sea lion have been studied. Genetic distances in two taxa of the seals were estimated. Time of divergence by all studied loci at Arctic and Antarctic seals, except for the pairs of ringed seal and Weddell’s sea leopard, is very similar.

  Biochemical and molecular-genetic studies significantly broadened conception on population structure of the Red-backed vole, field mouse, as well as on processes occurring in isolated populations of small mammals in the North-East of Asia.
