The laboratory was organized in 1976.

 Major trends of research

  • Study of species diversity and  bird fauna formation  history in the North-East of Russia.
  • Population structure and dynamics of widespread, game and rare bird species (anseriformes, charadriiformes, galliformes and falconiformes).
  • Ecology and migrations of arctic and subarctic birds concerning their Arctic adaptation.
  • Basics of ecological stability of birds’ populations in landscapes of the Northern Far East.
  • Important Bird areas in the North-East of Russia and their role in preservation of avifauna in the North Pacific region.

Main research achievements of the Laboratory

  • Distribution and biology of sea birds in the Northern Pacific was studied. Census and monitoring was performed on the Talan, Matykyl and Iony islands. Comparative data on breeding success, human impact resistance, nestlings growth rate and feeding of fish-eating and plankton-eating  species were obtained.
  • Successful survival of Tufted puffin, Horned Puffin and other fish-eating species of the sea birds in Taui bay was shown to be based primarily on the seasonal migrations of herring, capelin, and dwelling of sand eel in coastal waters.
  • Sea bird colonies inventory was performed for the northern coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk. Data on species composition and numbers were obtained for sea bird colonies on different islands. It is shown that the most important colonies are situated on the island of Yamsk archipelago, Talan and Iony islands.
  • Spring migration observations and ornithological faunistical examination were carried out in various coastal areas of the Sea of Okhotsk, Okhotsk–Kolyma watershed, and the Kolyma river basin. New data on migration phenology and species composition were collected in several key parts of the coastal area of the Sea of Okhotsk. Data on migration strategies are generalized for some Anseriform and Charadriiform species by the examples of Arctic Geese, Great Knot and Ross’ Gull.
  • Spatial distribution and breeding biology of different groups of birds from the plains of the Kava river basin were monitored; these habitats are considered to be the most productive ones for waterfowl species all over the Magadan region. This area is known to be the southern-most breeding site for the isolated population of the White-fronted Goose and also the most considerable breeding habitat of the Whooper Swan.
  • New data on 72 rare bird species of the Magadan region have been collected. 20 species are included into regional and federal Red Data Books. This list includes such species as Yellow-billed Diver, Black Brant, Baikal Teal, Falcated Duck, Smew, Hen Harrier, Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, Little Rined Plover, Oystercatcher, Nordmann’s Greenshank, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Solitary Snipe, Far-eastern Curlew, Ivory Gull, Aleutian Tern, Kittlitz’s Murrelet, Ural Owl, and Brown Dipper.
  • Book “Wetlands of the North-Eastern Russia” was published, reviewing the state and position of the unique wetland sites in the far-eastern North. Ramsar criteria for the most valuable sites were evaluated in order to protect their high biodiversity and resource values.
  • Faunistic and bird census data were included into bird-related chapters and maps of several recently published books, such as “Plants and Animals of the Magadansky state Reserve”, “ Biodiversity of the Taui bay of the sea of Okhotsk” and “Zavyalov island”.
  • Monograph “Waterfowl of North-Eastern Asia” based on the long-term studies of waterfowl numbers, ecology and spatial distribution, was published. Some data were included into cadaster of  “Wetlands of Magadan region” for the “System of monitoring and conservation of waterfowl in Russia”.
